Neck pain | Crosby Chiropractic | Liverpool

Our Chiropractors know that Neck pain is very common. Many people suffer with an episode of neck pain in their life. A lot of the time it starts suddenly and just as quickly as it appeared it disappears without need for any chiropractic treatment.

However, this is not the case for everyone. Some people may suffer recurrent episodes or neck pain that is debilitating and doesn't seem to ease or go away. Neck pain can also be associated with having headaches and arm pain.

There are many causes of neck pain, an example of this could be poor posture or onset following a road traffic accident.

When treating neck pain at Crosby Chiropractic, diagnosis is key to solving the problem. There are different types of neck pain; Here are the three most common we see in practice.

  1. “Mechanical” neck pain- pain is not related to any underlying medical condition, there are no trapped or damaged nerves. Patient may have muscular and ligamentous involvement as well as the joint itself. Causes of this range from Poor posture or sitting position.

  2. “Arthritic” - Wear and Tear in the joints, intervertebral discs narrow causing stiffness and pain.

  3. “Post- Traumatic” - Following a car accident, sports injury, minor fall/ bump to the head and neck can give rise to pain. Whiplash often results in damage to the soft tissues of the neck.

Less frequently nerves may be trapped, compressed or irritated. There are many reasons how this can happen such as damaged discs and wear and tear. Pain can spread into the shoulder and arm. Other symptoms may include pins and needles, numbness and weakness in all or part of the arm and hand.

What can a Chiropractor do to help? Here is what the British Association of chiropractors has to say:

“Chiropractors specialise in assessing, diagnosing and managing conditions of the spine. They are highly trained in finding the cause of pain in the spine. In the UK they undergo a minimum of four years’ full-time training. Importantly, chiropractors are regulated by law and must work within strict professional and ethical boundaries.”

“Before starting treatment, your chiropractor will undertake a full assessment. This will involve taking details about your condition, current health and medical history, and performing a physical examination. Sometimes it may be necessary to refer you for other tests, such as X-rays, MRI scans or blood tests. It is important for your chiropractor to gather as much information about your neck pain as possible so that an accurate diagnosis can be made.

Before starting treatment, your chiropractor will explain what is wrong, what can be done and what can be expected from chiropractic treatment.”

“Chiropractors are best known for manual treatments such as spinal manipulation, where they use their hands to free stiff or restricted joints, or mobilisation, which is the gradual moving of joints. They may also use other techniques such as certain types of acupuncture, electrotherapy, stretching exercises and rehabilitation, all of which form part of a chiropractor’s package of care. Your chiropractor may also offer lifestyle advice to help prevent repeated episodes of neck pain.

If your chiropractor does not think you can be helped by chiropractic treatment, you may be referred back to your GP or to another health professional. Chiropractors do not prescribe medication, so if this is needed, you may be referred back to your GP. As chiropractors support a joined-up approach to care, they may ask if they can send a brief report to your GP.”
